At Mondi, we work closely with our customers to help them achieve their sustainability goals and overcome challenges presented by packaging changes.

This was the case when we partnered with Paulig, a long-time Mondi customer, to change the company’s coffee packaging – and create one of the world’s first mono-material structures suitable for vacuum-packed coffee.

Paulig is an international food and beverage company and has set themselves the ambitious goal of being a sustainable frontrunner in the industry. One of their targets is to reduce its value chain and operations greenhouse gas emissions by 50% and 80% before 2030

Vacuum-packed coffee packaging traditionally relies on multi-layer laminates which include polyamide and an aluminium layer. They provide good product protection, but they are difficult - sometimes impossible - to recycle. Paulig was keen to move to a more sustainable packaging solution for its products and reached out to Mondi.

Our challenge was to create an alternative, designed for recycling, that would still deliver the same protective qualities as the multi-material packaging: strong barriers, tightness, functionality to the consumer with easy opening and resealing, but without the materials such as aluminium.

The project began in spring of this year and by bringing together the knowledge of Mondi and Paulig, we were delighted to launch an alternative mono-material solution, ensuring the brand is represented well, the product is protected, and the business is able to work toward achieving its ambitious sustainability goals.  In this video, the Paulig and Mondi experts talks us through the project.
