Mondi celebrates double win at RISI PPI Awards

  • Mill Manager category: Klaus Peller - Managing Director, Mondi Syktyvkar (Russia)

Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper is contributing to a better world by making innovative, sustainable packaging and paper solutions. Mondi made the shortlist in five categories and was awarded first place in the Risk and Safety , and Mill Manager categories at the annual Fastmarkets RISI PPI Awards. Drawing entries from across the global Pulp and Paper industry, the awards recognise leadership, vision, innovation and strategic accomplishments within the sector. 

The Risk and Safety prize was awarded to Mondi’s containerboard mill in Świecie, Poland, for its resilient and robust risk management strategy which is based on Mondi’s culture of ‘Work Safe, Home Safe, Everybody, Everyday’. 

Markus Gaertner, CEO Corrugated Packaging, Mondi said: “The safety and well-being of our employees and contractors is our number one priority at Mondi, so it’s gratifying for our risk management processes to be recognised. While we are one of the safety leaders in our industry, we are determined to create a culture where people act safely in everything they do." 

Mondi Świecie actively engages all employees and contractors in its approach to risk through events, training and campaigns. Its annual ‘Making a Difference Day’ involves over 400 people, giving employees the knowledge and tools needed to be an advocate of safety and environmental stewardship. Mondi Świecie’s contractor safety management programme ensures the safety of a further 4,500 contractors every year by providing training on Mondi’s values, expectations and safety rules. 

Klaus Peller, Managing Director of Mondi Syktyvkar in Russia, received the Mill Manager Award for his inclusive leadership approach, which has played a significant role in the mill’s increased productivity. 

Since his appointment as Managing Director in 2011, Klaus Peller has increased machine productivity at Syktyvkar by 29% and pulp output by 32%, while also decreasing energy consumption on main machines by 10%. This is in addition to overseeing a €135 million project to modernise the Syktyvkar Power Plant and build strong relationships with local communities, including unique educational projects. 

Gunilla Saltin, CEO Uncoated Fine Paper, Mondi said: “Klaus has made an incredible contribution to the success of Mondi Syktyvkar and has earned the respect of the employees in the mill. The progress the mill has made in the last nine years in terms of productivity, people development and sustainability demonstrates his leadership and the culture he has fostered within the mill.” 

It is important to recognise the progress being made across the Pulp and Paper industry. Mondi sends congratulations to all the other finalists and winners in this year’s Fastmarkets RISI PPI Awards.
