Operating a forklift has always been my dream job

As part of our Spotlight On series, we are profiling several Corrugated Packaging colleagues to highlight the opportunities, and occasional challenges, of our growth journey.

Kadriye Bilgin achieved her childhood dream when she obtained her forklift operating license in 2006. Seventeen years later, she became the first female forklift operator at Mondi Tire. Learn how Kadriye is driving change on the shopfloor in Türkiye.

As a child, I loved anything on wheels.

My family are farmers from Tire in Türkiye. I grew up in a village with a small factory, and I was fascinated by the heavy machinery and vehicles. As a child, I loved anything on wheels – tractors, motorcycles, bicycles, you name it! My family, especially my father, recognised my talent for driving and gave me the freedom to pursue my dreams.

I remember exactly when I decided to become a forklift operator. It was while walking to our field, passing the factory garden. The sight and sound of the forklifts in action struck a chord with me. Right then, I knew what I wanted to do.

I got here through hard work and determination – and by following my passions.

I’ve always been inclined towards driving ever since I was small. Those were perhaps childhood dreams then, but thanks to my desire and determination, that dream has come true. In my opinion, there is nothing a woman cannot do. You just need to believe, be brave, and be determined.

I wish I’d joined Mondi sooner.

I spent 19 years at another factory in the region, but I always dreamed of working for Mondi. I have a self-confident, determined personality, and I was able to make it happen. I’ve now been working as a forklift operator at Mondi’s Tire mill for about a year.

When I realised how much Mondi prioritises job safety, I regretted not joining earlier. At Mondi, safety isn’t just a policy – it's a commitment ingrained in our actions every day. We are constantly reminded that ‘Returning home safely to your family is our most important priority’.

I was the first female forklift operator at our Mondi Tire mill.

I felt like part of the team very quickly, and we work well together. Some truck drivers visiting the plant are still surprised when they see a female forklift operator.

Education comes first...

While my sons inherited my interest in machinery, I stress the importance of education. Growing up in a village, I missed early educational opportunities and had to catch up later in life, juggling studies with work. It was a tough seven years, but I graduated.

... because it gives you opportunities.

My husband and I value our children’s education highly and encourage them to read. It gives you so many opportunities for the future. I always emphasise the importance of equality in the workforce. Whether a woman or a man, you can do or achieve anything you set out to do. With courage, a desire for self-improvement and a little determination, every challenge is an opportunity. This mindset has not only shaped my career but allowed me to inspire others along the way.
