Recyclable Packaging

Recyclable packaging header image

From 2030 all packaging in the EU must be recyclable

From 2035 packaging must also be recycled at scale.

Packaging will only be considered recyclable if it fulfils the Design for Recycling criteria (D4R), which are anticipated to be published in 2028.

Once each packaging type has been assessed against these criteria, they will be categorised into three grades.

Grade A

more than 95% recyclable

Grade B

more than 80% recyclable

Grade C

more than 70% recyclable

Recyclability of less than 70% will be considered as non-recyclable and cannot be placed on the market after 2030

Packaging waste must be collected separately, sorted and recycled in installed infrastructure (equal to or greater than 30% for wood-based packaging and 55% for all other materials).

An additional benefit of using sustainable packaging will be lower Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) fees for higher recyclability graded packaging.

Mondi offers a broad range of paper, plastic or hybrid solutions that are designed for recycling. Furthermore, 100% of Mondi’s corrugated and containerboard packaging is fully recyclable.
