How can we overcome the limitations of traditional training methods to tackle both the psychological and social aspects of people safety?

This is the question asked by colleagues at our Kalenobel plant in Türkiye who came together to develop a more engaging and psychosocially-oriented safety training programme, based on knowledge sharing and a variety of innovative teaching methods.

Mondi’s ‘Social Psychology of Risk’ approach

Safety training plays a crucial role in enhancing workplace safety and employee awareness. However, traditional educational approaches are often passive and neglect individual and cultural needs. So, the team aimed to make safety training more interactive, experiential, and emotionally and psychologically enriched.

This included hands-on activities, use of virtual reality and mechanical simulators to apply theoretical knowledge in real-word scenarios. We also focused on stress and wellbeing management, communication skills, conflict resolution to develop the emotional and psychological resilience needed to work safely, performance assessments and self-reflection exercises to measure employees’ learning and progress.

Implementation of this approach in the Kalenobel plant has led to enhanced employee safety awareness, learning retention and balance between training workload and time. This helps our goal to cultivate work environment that supports our colleagues’ mental and social health.
