Mondi quality control

A proactive approach to quality management and effective quality controls help to prevent unsustainable packaging production even before commercial production starts.

We follow a first-time-right approach that helps us and our customers to avoid extra costs, time and waste due to reworks and reproductions.

So what does this ‘first-time-right approach’ mean to us in a production setting?

As an example, we monitor the first-time-right rate as ratio between good (saleable) and total production for our products and made an interesting discovery for one product during its industrialisation phase.

This product was being produced on co-extruders, which are capable of processing two plastic granulates simultaneously and enable the generation of a high process output. The co-extrusion caused an unexpected high level of holes in the polyethylene film that needed to be taken out at the finishing department.

The low first-time-right rate for the production of this plastics-based product would have caused €160K of waste, extensive loss of time in the finishing department due to rework and a high risk of customer complaints and claims.

After switching over to process the material on one single extruder that is capable of production with significantly fewer hole, the commercial production could be started first-time-right with a clear reduction of the waste volume and an improved on-time-in-full (OTIF) figure, and minimised risk of quality-related customer complaints and claims.
