Mondi’s Dynäs kraft paper mill in Sweden recently published a report on the outcome of its Socioeconomic Assessment Toolbox (SEAT) process. The Mondi Dynäs SEAT process was facilitated by an independent third party and involved more than 80 open and transparent conversations with senior Mondi representatives and key stakeholders including employees, local residents, entrepreneurs, schools, raw material suppliers, local and regional authorities, infrastructure providers and the media.

Mondi has been using SEATs for 15 years to understand the impact of its mills and forestry operations on the communities in which it operates and wider stakeholders. The resulting insights can help improve collaboration among stakeholders and even identify investment and partnership opportunities between the mill and local organisations.

Overall the report findings were positive, including that Mondi Dynäs is:

  • a strong and reliable business partner with straightforward tendering processes, negotiations and fair payment terms;
  • a responsible manufacturer and an industry leader in working conditions by supporting both the physical and mental wellbeing of its employees;
  • leading in workplace safety, with employees, contractors and suppliers confirming safety as a top priority;
  • committed to making continuous improvements and investments to improve its environmental performance.

Opportunities to improve were also reported, such as:

  • communication and engagement with local stakeholders, including more visibility at industry forums and educational institutions to raise awareness and help Mondi Dynäs attract new local talent;
  • employee empowerment to encourage all employees to think analytically and make independent decisions;
  • a more diverse and inclusive working culture with a focus on promoting gender diversity through recruitment, succession planning, training and culture change.

We would like to thank everyone who took the time to tell us about their experiences. It gives us a fantastic opportunity first to understand, and then to respond. Since the interviews took place, we have developed a new communication strategy and activity plan, expanded our information exchange with entrepreneurs, scheduled annual meetings with authorities, and made a plan for better school co-operation. We have also clarified the extensive efforts we are making to minimise our environmental impact on the community, and will now place greater focus on communicating these efforts to the community and our stakeholders.
